Organizing Discussion Programme in Musikot Municipality (Khalanga, Rukum)

On December 25, 2014, interaction programme was organized in the Hall of District Development Committee. 103 participants representing political parties, civil society, social workers, government officials, businessmen, teachers, journalists and participants from Project area (Hukam, Ranmamaikot andSisne) were present in the programme. This programme was chaired by the Local Development Officer of Rukum Mr Bharat Kumar Sharma. In the programme, Knowledge Management Officer Ms Renu Napit presented the power points on Introduction of Yarsagumba and impact of climate change on the production of Yarsagumba. Project coordinator Mr. Bikash Gnawali presented the power points on methods and challenges of Yarsagumba conservation. Similarly, Field Officer Mr. Pustak Chand shared the participants about the achievements of the project implementation. Mr. Ganeshman Pun (Constituent Assembly Member from project area), Ex-State Minister Mr. Gopal Ji Jung Shah, Vice-Secretary of Nepali Congress District Committee Rukum Mr. Bhim Bahadur Khadga, Mr. Ganesh Khadga, District Committee Member of CPN (UML) and Mr. RameshworBudha, Secretary of District Committee Rukum of UCPN (Maoist) expressed their valuable views. Local Development Officer, Mr Bharat Kumar Sharma, expressed his view about the importance of this project for the conservation and management of Yarsagumba in the Rukum District. He thanked the project team for selecting Rukum district as project area. He wished for the success of the programme and assured to fully help from his side. In behalf of the local community people, Mr. Laxmi Prasad Pun, Social Activist of project area expressed his views and told that due to lack of attention of concerned agencies Yarsagumba (locally known as Jeevanbuti) is being not Jeevanbuti but Jeevanbhuti (life destroyer) for them because throughout the year they are engaged in the conservation of the Yarsagumba which has blocked them from exploring other opportunities. Journalist and other participants shared several experiences and raised queries concerning the effective implementation of the project. Project Coordinator, Mr Bikash Gnawali and Field Officer Mr. Pustak Chand answered to the questions raised on the floor. Programme was conducted in two sessions, in the second sessions three groups were formed among participants and they listed major challenges in the conservation of Yarsagumba and recommended alternatives for the sustainable harvesting of the product. Mr. Jeevan Khadka, Chairman of Civil Society, Rukum was involved as rapporteur in the programme. Final findings of the programme were disseminated through the local media.
